You forgot to mention that the "General Blending Option" Must be Set to "Overlay"

Otherwise it comes out White/Grey

I have tried and tried and finely tried again to get the same effect as you did and I'm still unable to achieve any success. What might I be doing wrong? My photoshop is old and plain. Just a regular Adobe Photoshop 7 I believe. But I should have the same tools as you used. My notes come out flat no contour to them at all plus their filled with a gray color. And should the music note layer have a mask? Please let me know if you can. Thank you.
