Nice short tutorial how to create simple but spectacular fabric text effect.

Let’s go! First of all, make a new document in Photoshop. I created a new document sized 1000×500 pixels with all the default settings, RGB, 72 dpi, transparent background etc. Then find some appropriate fabric texture. Actually, you can use Google Images to find the texture or feel free to use mine. Open up the texture and copy it to the canvas.

Now, duplicate this texture three of times and combine as below. Be attentive that texture edges are different (you can see arrows on the borders).

Use the Eraser Tool and a soft round brush about 50 ps to make the edge of textures softer and invisible.

Ok, merge all of texture layers in one and apply Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.

You should have the result similar to this:

Make texture clearer with Sharpen Tool:

Ok, we are done with background. Let’s start to create text effect. Get out the Horizontal Type Tool and write out your text, for example ‘ClotH’ in whatever color you want. I’ve used a font called Arial Black (300 pt, Crisp). This is standard Windows font.

After that change fill opacity to 85% for this layer and begin to create text effect. First of all we need to add some pattern to Photoshop patterns palette to use it for creating text effect later. Open this texture or find another one using Google Images and use Edit > Define Pattern to save this picture as pattern. Go back to our created file and apply the following layer styles to the text layer:
• Drop Shadow
• Inner Shadow
• Outer Glow
• Inner Glow
• Bevel and Emboss
• Contour
• Satin
• Color Overlay
• Pattern Overlay
• Stroke

Now your image should now look like the image shown below:

Start by creating a new document to make this text effect. I created a small document sized 500×300 pixels and fill it with color of #74a103:

After that cerate a new one layer, then select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and make the selection, then fill this selected area with color of #b6e100.

Remove the selection with Ctrl+D and apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with similar settings to these:

Your result should look like mine:

Now it’s time to add your text to the canvas! Start by getting out the Horizontal Type Tool then write out your text.

The font I’ve used above is called Futura. Ok, start to create the text effect. Rasterize this text layer with Layer > Rasterize > Type. Press Ctrl+J to copy the layer and hide the original layer (click on the eye, which indicates layer visibility). Go to the upper layer and apply Gradient Overlay layer style to this layer.

See the difference now:

Start to transform current layer with Edit > Transform > Skew to get the text as on my picture below:

Now, we need to do is add the glare on the letters. Create a new layer and make selection using the Rectangular Marquee Tool as on picture below and fill it with white color.

Remove the selection with Ctrl+D and apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with following parameters:

The result you can see on the picture below.

After that create a new one layer, make selection using the Rectangular Marquee Tool and fill it with white color again.

Remove selection and apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with other parameters:

Your image should look as mine.

Merge two of these layers in one and rotate it a little bit with Edit > Transform > Rotate:

Duplicate this glare three of times and bring to each letter.

Merge all glares in one layer. Ok, press Ctrl and Left click the text layer Thumbnail in the Layers Palette to make letters selection, then press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert selection and use Delete to clear selected area.

Remove the selection with Ctrl+D. Go back to the hidden text layer and make it visible again. After that apply Edit > Transform > Skew to skew this layer.

Don’t apply transformation unless don’t reduce the height of the letters with Edit > Transform > Scale.

Ok, apply Color Overlay layer style to this layer.

Now, we have different color for the letters.

After that create a new one layer, then select the Polygonal Lasso Tool and begin to connect the upper part of the letter with its projection. After that fill selected area with color of #689106.

Finish other letters in the same way.

Ok, merge current layer with layer under. Now, we can start create volumetric letters. Get out the Polygonal Lasso Tool and create selection as on my picture below. Then apply the Dodge Tool (Brush: 45 px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 30%).

After that press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection and apply the Dodge Tool with similar settings as before.

Ok, now select the Burn Tool (Brush: 45 px, Range: Midtones, Exposure: 30%) and add a little bit more dark spots on the letter side. Then remove the selection with Ctrl+D.

Process other letters in the same way.

Now I suppose, we need to focus sharpness of brushes. Use the Sharpen Tool (Brush: 600 px, Mode: Normal, Strength: 50%) and focus the sharpness. We should get the following result:

Well, it’s time to add the text. Use the Horizontal Type Tool and type the text, for example: ‘SMOKE.’ Font which I used – Arial Black is standard font from Windows fonts library.

Now, we are starting to create an effect. But we need to find the right pattern before, which we will use in the text effect further. Using Google Images we may find the right pattern or you can take mine. Open it and save as a pattern. To do this: go to Edit > Define Pattern.
Now, go back to our main document and apply following Blending Options to this text layer:
• Drop Shadow
• Inner Shadow
• Inner Glow
• Bevel and Emboss
• Contour
• Pattern Overlay
• Stroke

Now we are starting straight to create a text effect. First of all we need to type some text, where the effect will be shown. Choose the Horizontal Type Tool and type text with any colour. Further when we have already had an inscription we can start to create an effect on it. But in the beginning we need to choose the appropriate pattern we will use further in our text effect. Go back to our main document and set fill opacity to 0% up, after that apply the following Blending Options to the text layer:

But this is not the final variant. Select text layer using Select > Load Selection, then apply Select > Modify > Expand to increase selection about 7 pixels. Create a new layer and fill the selected area with black colour. After that apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise with similar settings to these:

You should get the same result as mine:

Now, deselect chosen area with Ctrl+D and change layer mode to Screen.

Then apply the following Blending Options to this layer:
• Bevel and Emboss

We should get the next one effect:

I’ll just be using the font called Helios-Black (180 pt, Crisp) for this tutorial, which is unfortunately commercial, that’s why feel free to use another one similar to that, for example, Arial Black, that comes with Windows. Select the Horizontal Type Tool and write out something like ‘JEWELRY’ below.

After that I think it will be a good idea to find some appropriate pattern with diamonds to apply it in our text effect later. Use Google Images to find diamond patterns or you can use mine. Open this picture and discolor it with Image > Adjustments > Desaturate, then resize image to 17х17px:

Make our picture a little bit sharper with Sharpen Tool (Mode: Normal, Strength: 50%):

After that use Edit > Define Pattern to save this picture as pattern. Go back to our created file and apply the following layer styles to the text layer:

• Drop Shadow
• Bevel and Emboss
• Contour
• Pattern Overlay
• Stroke

Now you should have a nice look like this:

First of all, using Google search find some appropriate image to create the texture from it. I prefer to use this one. Also feel free to use your own pictures. Now create a new document sized 1000×500 pixels and bring out picture into it.

Duplicate this layer with Ctrl+J and move two of these layers like on picture below. Use the Eraser Tool and a soft round brush with brush size about 100 px to make texture edges softer.

Ok, merge two of these layers. Now I would like to begin stylization process. To change the color use Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation with similar settings to these:

Your image should look like mine:

Now I would like to make the texture more contrast. For this effect use Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast with the next presets:

To finish off stylization process apply Inner Glow layer style for your texture layer:

Now we have something like this:

Alright, time to write out your text. I’ll just be using the font called Arial Black (230 pt, Sharp). Write out something like on a picture below in the middle of canvas using Horizontal Type Tool.

Before you will start to create leather style text effect you need to find some texture for this text effect or feel free to use mine. Open up this texture. I think we can bring more interesting effect to this texture. Create a new file sized 75х225 pixels and copy the texture onto it. Then using the Rectangular Marquee Tool create selection like on a picture below and fill it with black to transparent linear gradient:

Then use Edit > Define Pattern to save this picture as pattern. We can close this file without saving. Also you need to create one more texture. Create a new document sized 10×10 pixels and using the Pencil Tool draw black and white squares like below:

Use Edit > Define Pattern again to save this picture as pattern. Go back to our created file and apply the Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Contour, Texture, Satin, Pattern Overlay and Stroke layer styles to this text layer:

And now we have the text style like this one below:

Now, firstly, you’ll have to create a new document in which you can make this text. For this tutorial I’m going to be using a size of 1000×500 pixels with the default resolution (DPI) of 72 and white background.

After creating your document, add in a suitable background using Gradient Overlay layer style:

Now we have something like this:

After that I would like to bring some picture to background to make the text effect more evident. Actually, you can use different pictures, but I prefer to use this one picture of robot Marvin. Bring it to the canvas and then reduce it a little bit as shown on a picture below:

Use the Outer Glow layer style to make the picture more contrast.

Alright, time to write out your text. I’ll just be using the font called Helios Black (270 pt, Crisp) for this tutorial, which is commercial. If you don’t have it, just try different font. Write out something like ‘gauzy’ in the middle of canvas using Horizontal Type Tool.

Now set fill opacity to 0% up, after that apply Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Contour, Satin, and Stroke layer styles to this text layer:

Also I would like to add some pattern to our gauzy text style. For this effect create a new document with size of 5×5 pixels and draw cross lines by using Pencil Tool as on picture below:

Then go to Edit > Define Pattern and save it as pattern. After that go back to our main document and apply the Pattern Overlay layer style to get the next picture:

Apply the Gradient Overlay layer style to this layer:

Now we have something like this:

This is the easy part; all you have to do is write out your desired text on the canvas. Get out the Horizontal Type Tool and write out your text, for example ‘Delicate’ in whatever color you want.

In the above image I’ve used a font called Cooper (170 pt, Crisp), which is sadly a commercial font. Feel free to try a different font, or you know, buy or ‘get’ a nice font from somewhere.
Ok, now let’s start with creating delicate text effect. First of all we need to add some pattern to Photoshop patterns palette to use it for creating text effect later. Open this texture or find another one using Google Images and use Edit > Define Pattern to save this picture as pattern.
Go back to our created file and apply the following layer styles to the text layer:
• Drop Shadow
• Inner Shadow
• Outer Glow
• Inner Glow
• Bevel and Emboss
• Contour
• Texture
• Satin
• Pattern Overlay
• Stroke

Now your image should now look like the image shown below:

Create a new layer and merge it with text layer to get all styles in one image. Then Press Ctrl+J to duplicate this layer, then go to previous layer and apply Filter > Blur > Motion Blur with similar settings to these:

Now we have interesting effect.

After that go to the upper layer and apply the following layer style:
• Outer Glow

If you like you can add some graphic elements to background, for example, stars. Get out the Brush Tool and select the standard brush with the next presets:

Go to background layer, create a new layer above and make the stars using color of #ffbebe.

Here’s how I made suspended translucent text effect. As for me it looks wonderful.

First create a new document, 1000×500 pixels, black background.

Then select Horizontal Type Tool and write something like ‘SUSPENDED.’

In the above image I’ve used Verdana as my font of choice, which is free and it’s sized at a meager 120 pt. Ok, now create a new layer, after that activate the Gradient Tool and a White to Transparent gradient, fill in the work area as on picture below. The gradient should move from top to bottom – Top being the most opaque.

Then create a selection of the layer contents for out text (you can press Ctrl and click the Layer Thumbnail in the Layers Palette to make this selection). Now, go to gradient layer and press Ctrl+J to create a copy of the gradient in the shape of the text.

After that you can delete the text layer because you don’t need it more for this tutorial. Using Rectangular Marquee Tool select and cut every letter to the separate layer but only type one letter per layer.
Create a new layer above all your letters. Create a selection of your first letter and fill in that selection with your selected color on the new layer. Set this layers Blending Mode to Screen.
Repeat this process for the remaining letters using different colors for each letter.
For letter ‘S’ use color of #ff0000;
‘U’ – #ff7e00;
‘S’ – #fffc00;
‘P’ – #a2ff00;
‘E’ – #06ec00;
‘N’ – #00d8ff;
‘D’ – #004eff;
‘E’ – #7200ff;
‘D’ – #f000ff.
You’d now have this:

Merge all of your white gradient letters and merge all of your colors into one layer. You should now have two layers – one with the plain gradient letters, the other with the colors for the letters. Then set up opacity to 60% and press Ctrl+J to duplicate each of two text layers. After that apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with similar settings as on a picture below for each of two layers.

Now you have something like this:

Merge all of text layers into one layer and using Rectangular Marquee Tool select and cut every letter to the separate layer but only type one letter per layer again. It’s time to make a rope to hang the letters. Select the Pen Tool; you need to make sure that you’re working with Paths instead of Shape Layers. Once you have it mastered make sure the path is joined up with the beginning point, this will be removed when we have stroked the line. Draw out your rope using paths:

You have your path done. Now make a selection from path (Right click on shape form on the Canvas > Make Selection with radius of 0 pixels), create a new layer and go up to the main menu, select Edit > Stroke then select the color of #e5ffff and a stroke width of about 3 pixels.

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate layer, then press Ctrl+F to apply Gaussian Blur Filter.

For the effect suspended in the air rotate (you can rotate the letters by using Edit > Free Transform) and move your letters as on picture below. Put all the letters above the layers with rope.

Ok, looking nice. Now you need to make aperture into the letters to make real effect suspended in the air. Go to lower layer with rope and use Select > Load Selection. After that go to each of layers with letters and cut away parts of letters by using Eraser Tool to receive image as below:

Press Ctrl+D to deselect chosen area and apply Eraser Tool again with similar setting to these:

Ok you are done! And the last one you can play with the background to make it funnier. Go to the layer with background and create a new layer above. Then select a soft paint brush from the tools menu and scatter some different sized spots of your canvas using different bright colors, for example #fe5a00, #ffe100, #7cff00 and #00fff5.

Now select the Eraser Tool and a soft round brush and erase some smaller different sized spots to get a picture as below:

Set the opacity to 27% up.

That is it. Great job!
